SEO Spam – An Unethical Practice

Spamming is a technique or trick played on the search engines by using deceptive means to gain a higher ranking in the search engine page results. It is used by inferior websites to inflate artificially the relevancy and value of the site. Webmasters often promise their clients of superior rankings and try to find loopholes they can exploit to achieve their target. It should be remembered that Google does not like their results to be manipulated by using deceptive means. It raises a red flag against any techniques that it finds unethical or misleading.

Emails are the most preferred choice of communication for many people today. But it is often annoying to receive a lot of unsolicited spam mails every morning. These emails crowd your connection and can even corrupt your server and computer. You should never respond to them as the sender will get more information about you. Spam emails are always illegal and unwanted. The spammers are actually criminals who abuse emails to earn their own profits. So what can you do to get rid of such mails?
Know the Importance of Installing a Spam Filter

It is always better to protect your computer from any such unwanted data. Using the latest version of spam filter can block email spam from creating any damage but spammers today are getting more ingenious day by day and are trying all the alternative means to penetrate even the latest filtering software. Checking the performance of the anti spam software can ensure your transactions to a certain extent, so it is a better option to introduce an internet hosted filtering solution. Spam filters will prevent the spam from reaching your mailbox and it will leave your internet connection free of traffic generated by these spams. It will also spare the major havoc caused to your system by these intrusive computer viruses. Spam prevention is always better than restoring the damaged system and a business. This will further ensure the immunity of your system from sophisticated viruses and even protect your server.

Webmasters should always follow certain guidelines so that Google does not consider the email as a spam. The rules are as follows:

• Doorway pages just created for search engines
• Pages that are loaded with irrelevant keywords
• Hidden links or hidden text
• Multiple domains, sub-domains and pages containing the same or duplicate content
• Cloaking or sneaky redirects
It is better to avoid using such practices as the search engines are not answerable to anyone. If your email or content is considered as a spam by the search engines then it is probably of no use.

How to Make the Best Use of Forum Marketing

Forum marketing is considered to be very lucrative if you are clear about your target group and your business requirements. You have to know the proper methods of using forums if you are keenly interested for promoting your affiliate products. For the beginners, it is important to sign up for an account at the forum. Usually forum accounts are free and to gain the confidence of the readers you have to introduce yourself properly, before trying to promote anything.

Forum offers the most eccentric platform for exploiting your writing skills as well as other skills like discussing important issues. If you are creative you can make a good start by contributing new threads in forums. The forum should be appealing and convincing and the language should impress the readers. Forum marketing should be done very carefully as any posts that are obvious advertisements are considered as spam. Never promote the products in your post although you are allowed to post about topics that are related to your product.

Forum advertising helps you to get more traffic to your website and here are certain steps that you can follow to be successful:

• Introduce Yourself
Forums have a space where you can introduce yourself and invite the readers. Don’t discuss anything related to your business at the beginning as people may not take interest in it. Be innovative and draw the attention of the readers through interesting posts and then slowly introduce them to your products.

• Write Quality Posts
The posts that you have written are displayed whenever your profile is shown in the forum. Writing any posts won’t work as you have to maintain the quality and add new materials to it. If you want to increase your post number, write threads that are not related to your business.

• Follow the Rules
You may get banned if you don’t obey the forum rules and this will have a negative effect. People will ignore you as you are not doing the things right. This will decrease the visits to your website.

• Endorse your Website
After writing quality posts when you have built trust, people will be willing to know more about you and your work. You can offer them incentives to sign up and slowly get them introduced to your services. Forum can thus be defined as a web application intended to hold discussion and post on certain topics.

Know the Secrets of Getting a Higher Page Rank

Page rank is a score or a numeric value that defines the importance of a page on the web. It is a method used by Google to determine the rank of a page in the search result. The higher the number of votes cast for the page the more important a page is. It is a tool that judges the quality and effectiveness of a site based upon the number of quality back links. Websites with a higher page rank appears on top of the SERPs and a higher page rank is important and desirable for all sites.
Page rank depends uniquely on the democratic nature of a site and it is the link building structure that acts as an indicator for a particular page. Google uses a mathematical formula to calculate the page rank of a website. The method is kept as a secret in order to avoid manipulation, spamming and spoofing, because everybody wants their sites to attain a higher rank in the SERPs. The ranking totally depends upon the quantity of inbound links and upon the ranking of the pages providing the links. Google records that if one page links to another page, an effective vote is casted for the other page. These votes casted are of great importance to the page and helps to secure a good rank effectively.

Does it Take a Long Time to get a Page Rank
This is the most common question asked by the website owners. Page rank is calculated on how relevant the web page is and on the quality and quantity of the inbound links and outbound links. Google assigns scores ranging from 0 to 10. The page rank of a site can be easily tracked by downloading the Google toolbar. The purpose of it is to indicate the relative importance of the site. 0 is very bad and 10 is exceptionally good. Initially you may not score a high ranking but with continual effort of link building, a good position can be acquired. It may take a long time, nearly three months before your efforts make any difference. Google only updates the database once in three months, so be patient and take the opportunity of learning from the mistakes you have made earlier.

The Flaws in Page Rank
We cannot say that the page ranking system is a flawless method of ranking a website. There are certain loopholes and people have come to know about them. They try to manipulate the data and try to attain a higher ranking. Link Framing is such an attempt of controlling a page rank. Here links are created with irrelevant pages and it is often automated. These collections of random links are a bad concept as Google uses filters to find if the content is a spam.

Defining Manual Directory Submission Process

Directory submission is the process of submitting site URL to web site directory. The process is not merely filling the form at directory submission page but also involves more than this. Now the question comes what all is involved in manual directory submission process. So following are the steps involved in Manual Submission of websites.

Selection of Web Directory
The first step is to select website directories which accept submission. There are three kind of directories Free, Reciprocal and Paid directories. You have to select directory as per your requirement. Major requirement for selection of directory is that it should be search engine friendly so that vote can pass from directory to website submitted. Quality of Internet directory is also important factor as submission to low quality or spam directory can have negative affect on site submitted. The best selection is niche specific directories.

Search for Website URL
Searching for URL of the website to be submitted in directory to ensure that it has not been already submitted. Directory editors hate multiple submissions and will likely remove your site if it is already in their listings. Directory submission process starts if the website is not already listed in directory

Selection of Proper Category
Browsing to an appropriate category e.g Computer and Internet > Internet > Web Promotion > SEO Services. This involves deep digging of directory structure to find appropriate category. Web site submission to proper category has more chance of approvals. The best way is to see other site listed in category selected by you. If they are similar to your website it means you have reached at right category.

Creation of Valid Email Account
Creation of separate email account for directory submission service. This is done keeping in mind that the email address will likely be spammed though, so don't use a personal email account. Valid Email is also required so that directory editor can notify you of any issues with your submission.

Filling of Directory Submit Form
Next step is filling of form after selecting category. Checking of title, and description of other website listed there to access what is editor view regarding title and description length. Filling the proper title and description as specified in the submission form. Other field usually required is Email, Name, Keywords and URL of the website to be filled. Rechecking of the directory submission form to ensure that all fields have been correctly filled and clicking the submit button. Verifying of the success page message to ensue that form have been correctly submitted.

Adding in List of Directory Submission
Adding the name of directory and particularly the category URL where you have submitted in separate sheet to avoid duplicate submission in future.

Checking of Directory Listing Approval
Last but not least to check the approval of website submitted. Checking back in a few weeks to see if the site has been added to the directory. This is necessary as in many cases directory editor do not inform about the accepting of website submission. If listing is not approved then again you have to repeat the process with selecting different category, title and description etc.

Special Instructions for Top Ranking in Google

These days Top Ranking in Google can make your business succeed, and although the ranking of Yahoo and MSN are very valuable, their combined market value is still below that of Google. This makes achieving high rankings in Google that much more important.

The right keywords

This article is not whether the keyword search I will not spend too much time on this subject, however, I felt it was important to brush at least on this slightly. If you are interested in reading more please see keywords for biological research SEO.

Make sure your goals are achievable. If you choose the wrong keywords that can make your entire experience optimization essentially a waste. Choose keywords that are achievable, but still continue to offer reasonable frequency search for your business. Your selection sentence should also aim to bring traffic to your site.

Using the hotel industry as an example, targeting the word hotel make very little sense, but reducing the bottom hotel Victoria BC you now have less competition and a more qualified audience. Keep your goals in perspective and go after the rankings achieved.

OPTIMIZATION WEBSITE

There is much room on the factors that play a role in your search engine rankings. Here are a number of these factors and what you can do to increase your chances of success.

Title Tag
The title tag plays one of the most important roles in Google's search results, and is almost always heading Google chooses for each of its ads. The placement of your target is the best expression used near the beginning of the tag and repeated again towards the middle or the end. Three uses of your target expression May be useful in some cases, as long as it is not too overwhelming. For best results on each page of your site should have a unique title tag.

It is also important to remember that because Google will use this as the great title for your ad, you should be attractive to potential researchers. Try adding a call to action, or other formula to make your ad appealing to researchers.

To illustrate the fact that Google takes into account tag, simply do a search on your target expression and take a look under the top 10. I tried looking for a fairly broad term hotel , and I saw that all entries had 10/10 in the title tag, and 6 / 10 had as the very first word. A quick analysis showed that the entire top 30 or the word had hotel or hotels in their title tags.

If you do one thing to your site, make sure all your title tags are relevant, unique and contain the sentence of your target for each page.

Meta Tag description
The tag Meta Description is still sometimes used by Google as the description that appears in the search results themselves. Although it is used for a more common practice of Google tends to use most often on sites with little content, or those based flash memory. I've seen still used for content-rich sites, but it is less common.

The tag Meta Description still has an impact on research rankings. Your best bet when using this tag is to keep it short and sweet with your target near the sentence the beginning and never repeated more than 3 times. Like the title tag, each page of your site should have its own unique description tag.

Meta tag keyword
When it comes to Google this tag is unnecessary, and won’t affect your ranking. There is some speculation as to whether a keyword spammy tag may, however, have a negative effect on Google rankings. Therefore, if you use a keyword Meta tags for small engines, it is better to keep it clean and not to take any risk.

Density

Keyword density plays a role in the overall standings, but it is not as cut and dry as it was. Once upon a time there was a magic number when it is used could almost guarantee top rankings.

This is no longer the case. Today, the ideal density varies from one industry to another, a sentence to sentence. To find out what you should aim density, take 10 or 20 search results and see what percentage of these sites use. In most cases you will find that most of these sites have a density very similar to another, and the average density is a good estimate of what you need to target.

Body of text and keyword placement
The location of the relevant text on your site will help establish the importance of your overall objective of the sentence. If you do not want to crush the engines and site visitors with a bombardment of the objective sentences to top, try to sprinkle in some cases, closer to the top as possible.

Perhaps
Be sure to include various synonyms for your target phrases in your body text on your site. Google will use these synonyms of equality in all relevant pages of your main goal phrases, which, in turn, can improve your chances.

To find synonyms that you can use a thesaurus, but the best way is to search Google itself and see exactly what they see as similar. Just search in Google for your target phrase preceded by a tilde, such as ~ hotels. According to analysis by search results for Google has any text in bold. These are all words that Google considers to be linked. By using the ~ hotels example Google reveals expressions like 'travel ', 'tourism', 'accommodation', and various hotel chain names such as 'Hilton Hotels '.

Keywords in Domain
There is still some speculation with a goal of the sentence as part of your top-level domain (TLD) is to use the search rankings. According to my experience, yes, there is value, while anything that was several years ago.

If you are first in the online world and who intend to precede area, consider using the phrase of your target, assuming that it is both relevant to your business name, and uses not more than one hyphen. Although several hyphens in a field can be successful, they are very frequent, with spammy sites; it is preferable not to take this route if possible.

While having a keyword located within your area may offer some juice grading, I would not suggest you go and make a field exchange. In most cases it would be better to work on your existing site than from scratch with a new domain.

Keywords in the specific web page
The assistance of specific keywords for the Web page’s can also help add a little value to your site, you use them responsibly. Consider using a keyword as a directory name and under a filename where he is a natural sense to do so. If you have a site that focuses on tourism and hotel listings at the local level, you want May to consider the following structure for your page on the Hilton:

Heading Tags
The investment objective sentences of the position of tags used to determine the significance of these expressions. But no longer do so, or abuse. Only place target phrases in a position tag if it makes sense to do so, and not flood pages with many tags. Heading tags are not as critical as they once were, but still a good contribution to a well optimized.

Link anchor text
This is the text that you click through a link. When it is full or partial target expressions are used in your text links that help convey a certain value to the linked page for those phrases. It is also true when one considers surrounding text. When the contents into the link are also applicable, the link holds a little more value.

If a link indicating simply here or www.domainname.com has its place, they offer much less value as a link that would use hotels as its anchor.

Image Alt text

Although the image alt text still plays a minor role, its largest part is in the use of image navigation function. If you have an image linked to another page, the text will be awarded roughly the same way as standard anchor text.

Image Alt text should always be short and precise and should be accurately describe the image itself, the page or image is a link to. Do not use alt tags as a place to stuff keywords.

Links Online

These are ties that are found in mid sentence, paragraph or the environment as opposed to a simple list of links as found in a menu or perhaps on a map. Links found mid paragraph tend to spend a little more on the value of the surrounding text and can offer more relevance to the linked page.

Site Navigation

It is absolutely imperative that your site is fully spiderable by search engines. This May seem obvious, but often webmasters on Google’s ability to explore a website. Google has become very advanced in what links it can follow and how it can spider a web site, but there are still things that can cause significant obstacles.

-- Flash: One of the most commonly made mistakes is the use of flash. If the flash is used as a sole means of navigation on the site, you can count on Google not see your internal pages, and have a disadvantage in terms of classification of the site.

-- Java Script / DHTML: These days, most Java Script and even DHTML menus can be spidered by Google; however, this is not always the case. If your site using any type of navigation and fantasy you're wondering why Google has not indexed your internal pages, see Google’s cache text version of your page. If you do not see a text links, then browsing May be invisible to Google.

-- Cinematography: Image based navigation safety has been for many years now, but if your site uses this form of navigation, it is essential to have short, the alt text on all your buttons. This text alt act as a standard for the anchor text text-based links. This is not only for research purposes ranking value, but take a look at Google’s cache text version of your page. If you have the image based links that have not alt text, these links do not appear. This doesn’t: Google won’t follow them, but for all those who visit your site on a text browser, your links will be invisible to them.

Web Structure
Avoid lengthy develop Web’s with foreign characters. While Google has reached a point where they can mass index Web strings, it is best to avoid them if possible. For sites using dynamic consider rewritten mod significantly to clean the Web not only to make it more user-friendly search engine, but more user-friendly way.

Three Golden Rules to get top Ranking in Google

The world of search engine optimization may in some ways seem hit or miss but while there are many ways in which to carry out search engine optimization there are certain general rules that will apply to any website. These golden rules are applicable across the board and should form the core of any search engine optimization campaign. By remembering these three factors you should be able to see your rankings increase. While this is no way a complete guide to SEO, it gives a good starting point to optimizing your website.

The first rule or commandment in search engine optimization industry is content, content, content. The general application that 'content is king' is a truism if you want to see increased rankings. The important fact to remember that any content on your website should ultimately be relevant and also high quality; a general rule of thumb is to create around four hundred words per page to ensure the search engines deem your pages worth reading. Spiders love lengthy strips of content and articles that increase the relevancy of your site. This is increasingly the case in the optimization industry; the way in which search engine algorithms seem to be going is towards semantic methods of search, hence content is of prime importance.

The content on your website should also be up to date, by constantly adding to your website you give search engines cause to constantly come in and check your content, this can increase your rankings efficiently. It shows the search engine spiders that your website is an ongoing work, a quality site that is striving to be a valuable resource. Try and include keywords in your content but do not make this the ultimate goal, stuffing a page with keywords will in effect harm rankings and look spammy in the eyes of the search engines. Keyword density is hard to judge as the goalposts are almost constantly changed by the search engine developers, an efficient optimization team should be able to keep abreast of developments and respond effectively.

Secondly, link popularity should be a major concern when planning an optimization strategy. A lot of search engines see links as a determining factor when listing and ranking websites. This can be considered especially true with Google which uses the number of links a particular site has to give it a page rank. This page rank is also dependent upon the quality of these links, if your links are relevant and of a high quality, rankings will undoubtedly follow. The assumption on the part of the search engine algorithms is that if a high quality site is linking to yours, your site will also be of a similar quality. As a conjunct to this, it is important that your website be easily navigable, by including a site map and ensuring everything is accessible with around three clicks you will be more appealing to search engine spiders.

Finally there is the Meta information that your site contains. These predominantly come in three parts, that of title, description and keywords. The title bears the most importance and should include phrases and words that may attract people to your website. Subsequently the description, as the first visible information that human users will see should also be distinctive and well written to attract custom. The keywords Meta tag has less importance but should still be included.

While these three rules are in no way an all encompassing approach to search engine optimization they are a good point to begin from. By getting these fundamentals right it is possible to create a site that has the potential to become a page topper. While nothing can guarantee a top position, these three general rules should form an essential part of your optimization campaign.

• Checking Your Link Popularity Regularly

Paid Inclusion

Paid inclusion is a way of paying search engines to index pages from your site. This is a quick way of getting search engines to find and index your site. It is also called PPI (Pay per Inclusion). This is a good method to get noticed quickly, but in the end does not have a high ROI

Pay per Click Campaign

PPC is a form of online advertisement. The object of Pay per Click (PPC) search engine marketing is to drive targeted traffic to your website. You pay search engines money only when someone clicks on an ad on the search engine's results page or homepage. Hence the terms ‘pay per click’ because you only pay when the visitor clicks on your ad. This may sound an easy way to high ROI, but can prove to be a headache if not managed correctly. Since it is not important that every visitor is converted to a customer, PPC has to be carefully targeted and controlled.

Organic Search Engine Optimization

Organic Search Engine Optimization is a process that involves analyzing and changing of the site's underlying code, architecture and content in such a way that it is selected and ranked naturally by search engines i.e. without any payment involved.
Search engine marketing is as important as any other advertising method for the advancement of your business or product. Maybe it is more important as it is viewed globally by millions.

How to optimize the Flash website

The SEO experts and Web designer professionals are getting the hot problem for optimizing the flash related websites. Flash movies and intros are frightening for SEO specialists. The reason is the spiders will not crawl the flash movies and search engines will not crawl the flash related sites. Flash movie contain the inside of the text in the movie you can simply count this text lost for boosting your rankings. Of course search engines are start indexing the flash movies if contain the plain text, this is just incompetent way for optimization of flash sites.

Flash movies are very composite to the search engine spiders to index the flash movies. The spiders only index the flash filenames only not the content. This will be applicable for all search engines. There is no difference of Google, yahoo and msn because search engines are really united.

Tips for optimizing the flash sites

1. create metatags

Creating the metadata is very important aspect in optimizing the flash site. even though it is often undervalue and misunderstood. Actually metadata is not the important to search engines but flash tools agree to add the metadata to your flash intros or movies. So the metadata fields are not empty.

2. Flash SDK search engine

This is the most important tool for the flash movies. This tool will extract the links and content from the flash movie. The tool named as implies swf2html. This tool extract the text and links of the macro media flash file and write the output into standard format of html document. Then you can save the file as it manually.

3. SE flash.com tool

This tool will show the your flash files is visible or not to the search engines. After installation of flash sdk software you can use SE flash.com tool too. Because it will give the extracted accuracy text from the flash movies. So this tool will give different results to you.

You should be following the basic rules of seo for flash related websites. They are don’t copy the content from your competitor sites; because it implies as doorway pages and don’t use the back ground color as similar to text color ; it will implies just like as hidden text.

Tips and Tricks for Search Engine Optimization

1. Write great content
Great content is where it all starts. You can have all the keywords in the world, but if your content is no good, people won't stick around on your site and search engines won't find your site valuable.

2. Write unique content
Unique content is important too. You need to provide content that has different information than what is on other sites and other Web pages.

3. Add new content all the time
Sites that have new content added on a regular basis are seen as more reliable than sites that rarely do. This also helps you to increase the amount of relevant content on your site, which also improves your rankings.

4. Create a great keyword phrase
The first thing you should do when working on search engine optimization is find a great keyword phrase for that page. You shouldn't try to optimize your entire site to one keyword phrase - instead focus on writing pages for specific keywords and phrases.

5. Choose a phrase that is popular, but not too popular
When trying to decide on a keyword phrase, you want to find one that is popular but not extremely popular. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the reality is that extremely popular keywords are very desirable and so very competitive. It's better to try to optimize for keywords that you can rank higher. You'll get more pageviews from a less popular keyword when you're on the first or second page of the search engines, than from a super popular keyword that you only make it to page 50 of search engines.

6. Write an accessible site
Accessible HTML is accessible to both search engine spiders and screen readers. The more accessible you make your pages, the easier it will be for search engines to read and rank your pages.

7. Use the keyword phrase in your title tag
The title tag is one of the most important tags on your Web page. And placing your keyword phrase in the title tag, preferably at the beginning, is very important to get that phrase into the search engines. Plus, that puts your keyword phrase as the link in the search engine index.

8. Get a domain with your keyword phrase
Putting your keyword phrase in your domain name is a great way to optimize for that phrase.

9. Use the keyword phrase in your URL
Even if you can't get your keywords into your domain name, you can put them into your URLs. Search engines read the URLs and assign value to the text they find there.

10. Use your keyword phrase a lot, but not too much
The ratio of your keywords to the rest of the text on your page is called the keyword density. It's important to repeat your keywords in your document, but not too much. Keyword density should be between 3 and 7% for your primary keyword phrase and 1-2% for any secondary keywords or keyword phrases.

Optimizing for Google, Yahoo and MSN

Search engine optimization is a regular process, if you want your website to be a top ranker in all the major search engine results, its mandatory to update your website according to the changing algos of search engines. To gain higher rankings in the search engine results, first we have to understand the three internet giants Google, Yahoo and MSN. These are the three biggest existing search engines available. Almost all of us use any one of these three to make searches for any kind of information we want to look for on the World Wide Web.

Although these three search engines rule the internet industry but they all have a tendency to dominate another. Google has more or less succeeded doing this. Here are some facts about the three search engines Google, Yahoo and MSN, tweaking them can help you to rank well in the SERPs:

Let’s start with Google:

Google

1. Google consider the domain age most important as compared to other major search engines.
2. Quality links obviously can attract any search engine.
3. Active websites (updated regularly at any level) are loved by Google.
4. Get Listed in The Major Directories, helps you to climb success ladder on Google.
5. To please Google your HTML markups should be up to date as well as up to the mark.
6. Google with its advanced algorithm has started indexing websites which are based on LSI. Pages on your website should be relevant to your theme.
7. Your website should not be limited only to three to four pages to be indexed by Google.
8. Hyphens in URLs with keywords will definitely work.
9. W3C Compliancy in the source code is equally important for Google.

Yahoo

1. Keyword in Title Tag work for Yahoo.
2. Keyword Density is also an important factor.
3. Lot of Links (Site wide links work in Yahoo.)
4. Getting listed in Yahoo directory helps you to climb high on Yahoo, which is paid one.
5. Domain should not be too young in order to rank in Yahoo.

MSN

1. Keyword in Title Tag
2. Keyword Density Works
3. Freshness in content, relatively young websites can rank well in MSN.
4. Lot of Links (Site wide links work for MSN.)

Google is Updating its Page Rank Again

It looks like we are going through another PageRank update. I’ve seen some blogs and websites move up in PR just in the last couple of days. SEOJ is now a PageRank 5 - woo hoo!

Well, just a little bit of info for you on PageRank, if you are not all that familiar. Having a PR4 really is not anything super duper to be proud of. If you do everything right in the SEO department, you can reach a PageRank of 4 within 1 year, no problems. You really don’t start getting the recognition you deserve until you hit PageRank 5 and beyond. But for every step in PR you take up the ladder, the more difficult it becomes to get to the next one. I think there are two reasons for that.

No. 1, it gets more competitive as you move higher up in PageRank. But, you also have to do more to convince the search engines that you are a trustworthy source. You don’t really have to work harder. What I mean is, once you’ve got thousands of inbound links from authority sources, getting more of them is a little more difficult to come by. You really have to be a trustworthy authority; you can’t fake it. Faking it in the lower ranks is easier, in other words.

But keep in mind that whatever your PageRank is today is not your real PageRank. Google updates its PR about three to four months behind when it actually goes up. So it isn’t real time. Since SEOJ went up to PR5 just in the last couple of days, that means we were at a PR5 three months ago. Assuming that we are still on the incline with our PageRank, I’m likely between a PageRank 5 and PageRank 6 - something like a PR 5.4.

Google PageRank is ever evolving. It goes up and down on a daily basis depending on what you are doing on your website. If you get plugged with negative algorithmic karma then your PR will go down. If you do the good stuff then it goes up, but you’ll never see it in real time.

Many SEOs don’t put a lot of stock in it any more. I still think there is some value in PageRank, but it isn’t what it used to be. It is a good measure to watch to determine if you are doing all the right things and making the search engines happy. If you see your PR go down, look back over the last three months to see what you might have done to influence that.

Good Ranking on Google Organic Search

The Internet has basically taken over every other marketing venue in terms of spending. The importance of being visible online is crucial to the success of a company, whether brick and mortar or with an exclusively online market.

In the UK last year Internet advertising grew 41.2%. Sixty percent of companies that are spending online right now plan to increase online budgets. Companies are directing more of their budgets online attempting to build their brand and engage end-users.

Being at the top of Google organic search is the top priority for just about every online marketing company that knows what that top placement would mean to a company. The difference between being at position#1 and #11, in many cases, means the difference between a profitable company and a company scraping by.

Of the many ways to spend your advertising dollars/pounds, Google Adwords offers the opportunity for advertisers to be visible to thousands of targeted consumers and be seen in the top of a search for the keyword or keyword phrase the company targets. This works in the same way as if they were buying a half page advertisement in a specific area of the local newspaper (i.e. a perfume ad in the women's section).

Google Adwords is a paid tool that advertisers can use to bid on terms related to their business, and potentially show up on the first page of results for those keywords. This can be very expensive depending on your market and your competition.

The question is, do you need to pay to be seen if you are already showing in the top ten? The answer is yes you do.

Each search engine uses different sources for things such as paid results, natural results or directory results...and in some cases they even use different sources for their secondary listings.

"So if I'm #1 on Google, why do I need to pay for an additional placement in paid search? Won't I be paying for traffic that I will probably already get?"

Not necessarily, and we are going to show you and prove why beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Favicon -- website icon

A favicon (short for 'favorites icon'), also known as a website icon, page icon or urlicon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such icons in several ways, and many recent web browsers can then make use of them. Browsers that support them may display them in the browser's URL bar, next to the site's name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page's title in a tabbed document interface.

The original means of defining a favicon was by placing a file called favicon.ico in the root directory of a web server. This would then automatically be used in Internet Explorer's favorites (bookmarks) display. Later, however, a more flexible system was created, using HTML to indicate the location of an icon for any given page. This is achieved by adding two link elements in the "head" section of the document as detailed below. In this way, any appropriately sized (16×16 pixels or larger) image can be used, and although many still use the ICO format, other browsers now also support the PNG and animated GIF image formats.

Most modern browsers implement both methods. Because of this, web servers receive many requests for the file "favicon.ico" even if it doesn't exist. This may annoy web server administrators by creating many server log entries, and unnecessarily loading the disk, CPU, and network. Another common problem is that the favicons may disappear if the browser's cache is emptied.

Originally, Internet Explorer only used favicons for bookmarks (for instance MSIE 6.0), which created a minor privacy concern in that a site owner could tell how many people had bookmarked their site by checking the access logs to see how many people downloaded the favicon.ico file. However, since newer versions of Internet Explorer (e.g. 7.0) and most other browsers also display the favicon in the address bar on every visit, this is becoming less of an issue.

SEO on a Global Scale

As part of a SEO team responsible for providing global services, I've helped meet the unique needs of clients in our Frankfurt, London, and Hong Kong offices.

We've had to recruit skilled, multilingual SEO experts -- no easy task. Global solutions require the right investment in infrastructure, but the benefits are reaped across both the domestic and international playing fields.

The fundamental gain is perspective. When looking beyond the U.S. Web, certain principles remain constant to search. Certain tactics are dependent on the engine, but some things never change. The landscape and players may be foreign, but traditional SEO translates well to the international scene.

Meeting the Locals

Let's face it. America is Google-centric, and with the search giant's 58 percent market share here, there's ample reason for that. Google greatly influences how and why we optimize, often setting the tone for the other search engines.

But what if Google isn't on top? Each region has its own dominant player, which means we must know the intricacies myriad foreign engines

For example, Baidu has a 60 percent market share in China, followed by Google and Yahoo at 26 percent and 9 percent respectively. This changes some of our optimization strategies for our Hong Kong clients. What works in Google doesn't necessarily work in Baidu, and the rankings reflect that.

We need to understand what's important to Baidu outside the usual suspects of on-page content, titles, and meta tags. What's true for Baidu is true for all search marketing: know thine engine.

Speaking the Language

How do you optimize when you don't know the search language? As with learning a foreign tongue, there are some subtleties in technique for which there's simply no translation. This territory is where multilingual SEOs earn their keep.

Despite the communication nuances, there are still several guiding principles that hold true across engines and on foreign soil.

First and foremost, content is still king. If the site has plenty of unique, crawlable content, it is in good shape for SEO. The techniques for ensuring a Web site may be indexed carry over almost exactly across the regions in which we've worked. Code tends to be code no matter the language, and Flash and AJAX are not friendly to search engines of any region.

Ensuring content is chock full of appropriate keywords is another piece that remains relevant regardless of location. While "tennis shoe" may be the top American search term, "sneakers" could easily be a more suitable term in Germany for the same product. Doing market appropriate keyword research is vital to targeting the correct terms for each country.

Clients must also host their sites in the country of the top level domain, develop back links from properties within said domain, and use social media sites popular in their region. Remember: links speak the language, even if you don't.

Developing Diplomatic Relations

As a global agency, we're in a unique position. We have offices located within the regions of our worldwide clients and can tap into these resources when needed.

Most often we use our global contacts for keyword research and translation, in order to make certain we capture the nuances of dialect and remain in line with the overall client campaign. Having global partners not only breaks down language barriers, but also give us an edge on the ground. It's a real asset having someone a client can meet with face-to-face to review deliverables and help answer questions on short notice.

Avoiding International Incidents

As with any marketing discipline, advertising agencies need to be cognizant of language and culture when working outside of the U.S. We've all seen advertising campaigns where the message is lost in direct translation, and it's easy for a few misspoken words to result in confusion and anger.

With SEO, understanding the language is even more important, as the user interacts with the brand via keywords in a search engine. Having regional contacts and a deep understanding of both local engines and culture will help you avoid social pitfalls.

Although the U.S. still leads in overall Internet usage, other countries, most notably China, are catching up quickly. As we expand further into international markets, SEO will require the same level of commitment abroad as it does at home. Regardless of its regional differences, search marketing is on a clear path of convergence.

Unethical SEO techniques are punishable

Although search engine optimization (SEO) is constantly changing, there are a number of techniques which are constantly viewed as against the rules, it has been claimed.

Barry Hurd, president of Social Media Systems, reports that "unscrupulous" SEO methods will result in punishment from the big search engines.

"Making sure that your company is aware of certain basic standards and not accidentally infringing on discouraged techniques is essential to making sure your online brand is a flourishing asset that is building value," he said.

Dishonest- or "black hat"- techniques include hiding a wealth of irrelevant keywords on web pages or page cloaking - showing search engines visually unappealing but maximised keyword pages that it would not intend for consumers.

Submitting identical content on different pages and providing multiple pages with a particular phrase for SEO is also frowned upon, alongside misspelling common words, brands or websites in order to appear when a web user submits a typo to a search engine.

Leading search engine Google has also publicly penalized websites which pay for reciprocal links, branding them unethical.

Latent Semantic Indexing

Latent semantic Indexing (LSI) is a process of extracting related words or information from your website content. This is very interesting topic in Information Retrieval (IR) System. Top search engines works on the latent semantic indexing (LSI) based.

Lexical indexing is completely based on Lexical analysis. Lexical analysis is the processing of an input which can be a form of sequence of characters which will be produce as output. A sequence of characters or symbols called as lexical tokens. A lexical analyzer will be divided into two stages. First stage is known as a scanner and second stage is known as an evaluator. The Latent Semantic Indexing is depending on these two states. LSI based search engine optimization is much more complex in comparison to normal search engine optimization. The search engine ranking for a particular website will have to pass several processes in the latent semantic indexing based search engine optimization. This process will contain the occurrence of a keyword in a document and the close relationship with the other words of the document, flavor of your website content.

If you're searching in a Latent semantic indexing (LSI) indexed database then the search engine looks at similar values it has calculated for every synonyms word and returns the best matched website that will be the best fit to the query. Because latent semantic indexing does not require exact matching words for ranking result.

For LSI based Search Engine Optimization we go through following process:

Categorization of the documents
Contextual Explanation from the lexical similar words
Conceptual Comparison
Cross-Lingual Text Analysis
Content Relationship Discovery
Document Summarization
Taxonomy Generation

Google Sandbox Effect

In the age of fair competition you may find it hard to believe that a search engine may hinder the appearance of a new website.

This is what is currently believed to be happening on more web servers today. Some programmers have viewed Google as uncomfortable to rank newer websites until they have proven their viability to exist for more than a period of "x" months. Thus the term "Sandbox Effect" applies to the idea that all new websites have their ratings placed in a holding tank until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence.

However the website is not hindered as much as the links that are reciprocated from other users. Newer links that are created are put on a "probationary" status until again they pickup in rank from other matured sites or placed directly by an ad campaign. The idea behind the hindrance is to prevent a fast ranking to occur on a new website. The usual holding period seems to be between 90 and 120 days before a site would start obtaining rank from reciprocal or back linking.

Some advice has been given to have companies you are going to reciprocate back add your link first to the website. This may help grandfather your site in, thus reducing the waiting time associated with "new" websites. People have noticed a 0 page rank when first signing up and receiving a bolstering 7 page ranking after 4 months. Why the delay? The fact is, that if people realized how easy it would be to get a high ranking, would that take away the credibility of the engine. It depends on whom you ask, but it does seem to be happening frequently to newer subscribers. Do not discontinue back linking, your rank will eventually appear.
